Growing Your Business

expand into export

Selling to distant markets

You will be in a much stronger position in the export market if you have an established business operation in Western Australia. You will need financial resources, and a personal commitment to succeed in ‘breaking-into’ an overseas market. If you have already traded interstate and learnt how to manage distant negotiations for sales, deliveries and payments, you will be better prepared for exporting. Not all businesses start their exporting from this base, some have services or products created specifically for distribution overseas, and they venture into exporting without establishing a local market. Regardless of the platform, the approach to exporting begins in the same way as starting a new business – with researching market opportunities.

There are a number of organisations, government and private, who provide assistance and support to first time exporters, as well as to exporters seeking new markets. Information about export support services is available from the SBDC, Tel: (08) 9220 0222.

The SBDC also has a partnership with Austrade to assist new exporters to get started through the TradeStart program.
